Colder weather means a spicier libation and New Riff puts its own spin on this Rye Whiskey.
This Northern Kentucky distillery continues to produce high-quality, affordable spirits. Their motto is: We are a new riff on an old tradition.” I could not agree more.
I love New Riff’s Straight Kentucky Bourbon, so I went into the review with that in mind. The complexity of this whiskey far outweighs its sister bourbon expression.
At 95% rye, you can imagine the rye aroma that permeates the rim. A hint of cocoa raised up but quickly went away. The first taste hit me quite hard and I could not get a read on the flavor profile.
Once I let it rest for a couple of minutes, I dived back in. Right away, oak, rye, and dried citrus fruit came to the forefront and I was pleasantly surprised; the finish was long and smooth. The heat was there, but not too bad. This is a very balanced whiskey that I could sip on over the holidays.
