The Masters of Whiskey Series pairs Rob Dietrich (Master Distiller) and other renowned whiskey makers to re-imagine craft whiskey and create more complex expressions. The BLACKENED x Wes Henderson Kentucky Straight Bourbon Finished in White Port Wine Casks was done in collaboration with Wes Henderson (retired Angel’s Envy co-founder).
The hook for this bourbon is that the barrel is subject to low hertz frequencies of Metallica’s music in the finishing process. This supposedly causes more interaction between the juice and the wood. I guess we will see if it works.
REVIEW:
Who doesn’t love Metallica? Once I opened the sample bottle, I was immediately transported to a cigar lounge. The scent of tobacco filled the room. After the initial pour, notes of raisin and cinnamon emerged.
The first pull coated my tastebuds with raisin, honey, and a slight hint of vanilla. Other than the raisin, the different flavors were nothing I was expecting but didn’t know I needed. The pairing of all the flavors worked well and made for an overall balanced draw.
However, the finish was the star. Smooth and full-bodied, not a lot of heat, but enough to satisfy the pickiest of drinkers. The cherry, tobacco and cinnamon flavors stay with you long after you expect and are lovely.
Metallica may be good for the soul, but this bourbon is good for long cold nights with a good book and a fire.
