I really looked forward to trying this bourbon from Tennessee. The 108 proof and the Calvados Brandy cask that it is matured in, made it sound intriguing. Heaven’s Door Bourbon pours a rich amber hue and reveals a delightful bouquet of aromas. Notes of caramel and vanilla dominate initially, offering a sweet and inviting introduction. Beneath the surface, subtle hints of oak emerge, along with a touch of toasted nuts, and baking spices. There’s a complexity to the nose that hints at the bourbon’s craftsmanship, promising a rewarding tasting experience ahead.
On my palate, it delivers on the promises made by the nose, with a smooth and luxurious mouthfeel. Initial flavors of caramel, brown sugar and toffee coat the tongue, providing a rich and indulgent sweetness. As the bourbon develops on the palate, layers of oak and apple spice emerge, adding depth and complexity. Notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove dance across the taste buds, accompanied by a subtle warmth that builds with each sip. Despite its robust flavor profile, Heaven’s Door Bourbon maintains a balanced and harmonious character, with each element complementing the others.
The finish is long and satisfying, with the whiskey’s flavors lingering on the palate. The sweetness of the caramel apples gradually fades, giving way to lingering notes of oak and spice. There’s a touch of warmth, almost like warm apple cider, that persists, leaving a pleasant tingling sensation that encourages another sip. As the finish slowly fades, a sense of satisfaction remains, inviting another taste. It has one of the best finishes I’ve had in a long time.
Overall, Heaven’s Door Bourbon is a well-crafted bourbon that offers a compelling and unique combination of sweetness, spice, and complexity. It’s rich flavor profile and smooth mouthfeel make it a pleasure to sip on its own, while its versatility also makes it an excellent choice for cocktails. Whether enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or in a classic Old Fashioned, Heaven’s Door Bourbon is sure to delight Bourbon enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
