Chicken Cock Double Oak is a bold and intriguing whiskey that uses a most unusual process in production. The double oak name suggests that it would be traditionally aged in a new white-oak barrel, then transferred to another barrel for a secondary finish.
However, due to the barrel shortage in 2014, Chicken Cock Double Oak actually ages for seven years in a USED oak barrel before finishing in a NEW oak barrel for another year. Thus, the name Kentucky “whiskey” and not “bourbon” on the bottle. This 8-year-old whiskey comes in at 92 proof and may be one of the best-designed bottles I’ve ever seen. It even has a built-in jigger top that makes tasting even easier.
On the nose, you’re greeted with a rich bouquet of caramel, vanilla and very slightly charred oak notes, accompanied by hints of cocoa.
Upon tasting, the complexity of Chicken Cock Double Oak truly shines. The initial rush of flavors includes robust caramel and honey, followed by a wave of oakiness that is both intense and well-balanced. The double oak aging process lends depth and sophistication, with layers of fruit, cinnamon spice, and a touch of dark chocolate adding to the whiskey’s complexity.
The mouthfeel is smooth and velvety, coating the palate with a luxurious texture that enhances the overall drinking experience. The finish is long and satisfying, with lingering notes of caramelized sugar and a gentle warmth that leaves you craving another sip.
Overall, Chicken Cock Double Oak is a standout expression that showcases a unique artistry and process. The bottle is gorgeous and well designed. This bourbon is sure to leave a lasting impression in both taste and visual appeal.
