Bear Fight Kentucky Reserve

Bear Fight Kentucky Reserve from Next Century Spirts out of Zebulon, North Carolina is distilled for a minimum of 3 years and is 90 proof. The mash bill for Bear Fight Kentucky Reserve is a mix of 70% corn, 21% rye and 9% malted barley. In every sip, you’ll experience, a Kentucky straight bourbon finished in reposado tequila casks. I was intrigued at the tequila cask finishing and eager to taste as other brands have tried this method, and they haven’t been the most enjoyable bourbons.

Bear Fight Kentucky Reserve greets you with a warm and inviting aroma that blends traditional bourbon notes with a unique twist. Initial scents of caramel and vanilla are immediately noticeable, followed by undertones of toasted oak and a hint of dark chocolate. As the nose develops, subtle hints of dried fruits, like raisins and apricots, emerge, adding complexity to the olfactory experience.

On the palate, Bear Fight Kentucky Reserve offers a robust and spicy flavor profile. The entry is smooth, with rich flavors of butterscotch and honey, accompanied by a gentle spice from the rye component. Mid-palate, the bourbon reveals hints of tequila and a touch smokiness, providing depth and character. The influence of the secondary cask finishing is evident, imparting a smoky undertone that complements the sweetness beautifully.

The finish is long with a pleasing warmth that lingers. Notes of spice, earthy tones and smokiness fill up the tail end, while the sweetness of caramel and a hint of tequila make a return appearance. The finish is rounded off with a slight smokey peppery kick, leaving a lasting impression.

Bear Fight Kentucky Reserve is a well-crafted, modern bourbon that balances traditional elements with distinctive modern nuances. Its rich and layered profile make it a very interesting front runner amongst the tequila cask finished bourbons. Whether you’re a seasoned bourbon enthusiast or new to the world of whiskey, Bear Fight Kentucky Reserve offers a unique experience that showcases the artistry of modern Kentucky bourbon making.

Cheers!
