On Sept. 10, RD1 Spirits launched its new bourbon line.
I had high hopes going into this review because I enjoyed their William Tarr line of bourbon.
According to their website, “In 1865, the Ashland Distillery was established, the first to obtain a federally registered distillery license, and was assigned RD#1. Located on Manchester Street at the city limits of Lexington, Ky., today, the remains of the original distillery can be found at what is now the entrance to Lexington’s Distillery District.”REVIEW:
As soon I popped the top off, a sweet French oak aroma filled the air. At 101 proof, this bourbon hits my sweet spot; not too overpowering, but with enough kick to let you know you’re drinking Kentucky straight bourbon. Knowing its finish, I went into the review expecting to taste caramel and oak, but to my surprise, hints of chocolate and cherry shined through on the back end.
The finish was unexpected, as the sweetness diminished as black pepper and just a smidge of clove entered, which was lovely and very deceiving.
Overall, this is a solid bourbon for RD1’s new line, and I know more is to come.
